As of Friday morning I am officially alive and not in fact a member of any undead community! I have the bruise -- still; and it keeps getting worse, too -- to prove it.

(I went to my physical at work Wednesday morning, sat down at the blood work station, and waited for 10-15 minutes while they (the actual station nurse and another one she went and got when she wasn't having success) tried to find a vein. And then they found one after using a blood pressure cuff instead of a tourniquet, but when they put the needle in ... no blood came out ... idek. I mentioned I live behind a Quest and got OH OKAY LET'S SEND YOU THERE THEN WE'RE REALLY SORRY WOULD YOU LIKE SOME DOUGHNUT HOLES SINCE THE BLOOD PRESSURE CUFF MADE YOU SO FUCKING DIZZY in response. At least the doughnut holes were good.)

I hate that I dread going to work so often now. I really do genuinely love my job, but then there's the part where the department manager doesn't listen when people tell him his ideas are complete shit, so we get stuck doing things that make no goddamn sense whatsoever while he wonders why we're taking so long to complete our scheduled testing. Gosh, I don't know, maybe the twelve changes you've made since November that we still haven't shaken all the problems out of? Might have something to do with it. Just saying.

I can't remember what I was planning on reading next -- other than The Merlin Conspiracy, because I just finished Deep Secret -- but I should probably find out. Or make a decision. Anyone have any recommendations? I can trade movie recs, if you like.

Since last year's went so well, I am going to keep track of the things I read in 2013 too. Go team me.

SO GUESS WHO'S SICK.

I have been attempting to ignore the "hey, you're getting sick!" signals my body has been shoving at me in the hopes that if it realizes I'm not paying attention it'll just stop, but, uh. I think the fact that I slept 11 hours last night and then took a 3.5 hour nap this afternoon kind of proves me wrong, there. (Well, that and the fact that my throat is killing me, I'm still exhausted, and also I keep fucking sneezing. AND IT HURTS TO SNEEZE.)

Other than that, idk. The problem I was having at work last week (which, for what it's worth, is not at all person-related) has gone from ARGH THIS IS AWFUL WHAT WILL WE DO to WAIT WHAT THE SHIT IS HAPPENING. Saturday morning I actually said "what the shit" out loud a few times when I was getting my stuff off of the printer (I use the one in our office because the spreadsheets I use are miles clearer on the laser printer than the one in the hall). But, you know, on the bright side, pretty sure my supervisor is no longer legitimately worried that the FDA might shut us down, so that's always nice.

(We got a warning letter a few weeks ago as a result of our response -- or lack thereof, I guess -- to the 483s (~observations~) they gave us when they came through and audited last summer. This isn't me telling information I shouldn't, because if you google "fda warning letter" and then go down to the recently-posted ones it's right the fuck there. A lot of the people I know, after reading it in its entirety, were of the opinion that what it wasn't saying outright was "you guys are really helping us with the ridiculous drug shortage in this country, and we really appreciate that, but believe us, if you weren't, WE WOULD BE CLOSING YOUR DOORS". Which is always nice to hear, right?)

Assuming said problem gets resolved soon, at least I'll have actual work to do again. (Actual work that I don't have to do in the antineo lab all gowned up, that is; possibly I ought to specify.)

After I get the stuff transferred over from my old computer to this one -- I'm still kind of upset, but really, the old one is on its last legs and I swear is giving me resentful looks when it thinks I don't notice -- I am planning on a Bomb Girls rewatch, because a) you know, uh, why not? and b) there's a fic that refuses to leave my head that I really ought to write, but which I really ought to re-canon for first. So. There's that.

Also, I have been plowing through the Otherland books, but once I'm done with those I'm not sure where I ought to go next. Anyone have any book recommendations? I will give pretty much everything at least a fighting chance.

(And anyway, speaking of which, howza all of you?)
tiltingheartand: (Default)
This year I am going to attempt to keep track of the books I read. (Not the movies, because I do that too often to count.) Mostly because I'm curious. Although I'm kind of worried I'll look at the total in a year and be depressed, but OH WELL. At least if anyone says "what did you read this year?" I will be able to tell them.

anyway, list )

Each thing I do I rush through so I can do
something else. In such a way do the days pass -
a blend of stock car racing and the never
ending building of a gothic cathedral.
Through the windows of my speeding car, I see
all that I love falling away: books unread,
jokes untold, landscapes unvisited. And why?
What treasure do I expect in my future?
Rather it is the confusion of childhood
loping behind me, the chaos in the mind,
the failure chipping away at each success.
Glancing over my shoulder I see its shape
and so move forward, as someone in the woods
at night might hear the sound of approaching feet
and stop to listen, then, instead of silence
he hears some creature trying to be silent.
What else can he do but run? Rushing blindly
down the path, stumbling, struck in the face by sticks;
the other ever closer, yet not really
hurrying or out of breath, teasing its kill.

So this afternoon I remembered that I left Nightmares and Dreamscapes half-finished like three weeks ago, so this is slightly less urgent than it could have been.

However! I still require input.

This weekend was unusually productive -- I wasn't actually expecting to do anything other than tidy, but who am I to ignore an urge to clean, even if it's at one in the morning? Especially when I have an empty suite in a mostly-empty building!

So, things I got done (some of these were this afternoon, to be fair):
-- cleaned up my room, since my yarn was all over everywhere
-- washed the counters in the kitchen
-- washed the stove
-- used the plastic thingy to scrape the stove, which means it is actually clean
-- vacuumed the bathroom
-- vacuumed the hallways & kitchen
-- mopped the hallways & kitchen, because vacuuming only does so much
-- re-vacuumed the hallways & kitchen, since mopping got up some dust etc.
-- ate lunch and dinner (this was today, obviously, and mostly an accomplishment because I forgot to yesterday, and also probably did Friday)
-- went through my online exit loan counseling, so they'll stop harassing me via email
-- did three weeks of laundry
-- folded it up (this is mostly noteworthy because I can count on one hand the number of times I have done laundry and folded that laundry on the same night this entire year)

Also I moved the shoes we're going to exchange out to the kitchen by the door so they don't stay here while we're out, but that takes a good deal less effort than all of that other stuff.

In between all of this madness today, I somehow managed to read most of A Wizard of Mars; the only reason I actually stopped was that it occurred to me I could pause, go put my laundry in, and then start reading again, and that this would be a much more efficient use of my time. After I post this and go get myself a snack, I plan on finishing it. :D

I feel like I start half of my entries nowadays with "and then I didn't post for (insert ridiculous amount of time here)". Probably this means I should post more, especially since I have a habit of composing posts while I'm showering; somehow I just never type any of them up.

BUT.

Today was my very first full day of I NEVER HAVE ANY MORE CLASSES EVER IN MY LIFE. It was awesome -- I woke up to an alarm, mostly because I had plans with [livejournal.com profile] twistomatic to go spend my meals in the campus center, so that was sort of lame, but the rest of the day consisted of finishing season 5 of Criminal Minds (well, up to what aired tonight, which I need to hunt down tomorrow at some point), watching a bunch of random stuff on TV (including ANTM, the elimination for which pleased me this week, much like last week's did), and then deciding to embark on a re-watch of Dead Like Me.

I feel these were all very good life choices. I also crocheted some.

One of the things I was considering posting was a poll so other people could help me decide what to read next, but then I remembered that I've had A Wizard of Mars sitting underneath my pile of hoodies where it couldn't distract me since it showed up in my campus mailbox. So actually I'll be reading that. The poll will probably be along shortly, though, since I could feasibly just read all day. MAYBE I WILL.

(That prospect is actually incredibly exciting.)

Back in May, I got an email from school informing me that they would be canceling the lab class I would have been taking this coming C term because there was only one other person registered (obviously that other person was the one I was taking it with; it's always nice to go into a class and have a lab partner already), and also informing me that while the section being offered B term was full, they would make special arrangements for us if we wanted to take it. And that if that didn't work, and either one of us had a problem filling some requirement, they would try and help us as best they could.

The only thing I was worried about was my minor, because I'd forgotten what classes I'd assigned to be in my minor. I finally called the registrar's office today to ask for that information, and ... discovered that they'd lost the paper.

On the bright side, I went back and re-figured everything out so that I can still get the major and the minor. The only problem I might run into is the fact that only three of the six minor classes can double-count, which is legit, but I might have a problem if the other three can't even count as my electives/ISPs/etc. to give me 15 credits total so I can, y'know. Graduate. I probably can graduate even without those classes, but, fingers crossed.

(I also had to email my main adviser to see if the random humanities class I'm taking C term will screw up my suff, since I think theoretically the suff project is supposed to be the last class or whatever in that series. I hope it won't, because I don't want to have to find something else to take. I already did that once this week.)

I finished Otherland: City of Golden Shadow today. Which, yay, I can move on to book 2, but I didn't have book 2. So I exercised, and showered, and footled around for a while, and then I looked outside and, lo and behold, there was an Amazon box outside our door! Containing River of Blue Fire as well as the ThouShaltNot CD I bought (Land Dispute, for anyone curious). It was terribly exciting. And this way I don't have to wait to keep reading.

Note to self: getting sunburned on the back of your neck, your face, your ears, and the lower parts of your arms, while a good deal less painful than that time most of your back and also -- fun times -- a good deal of your chest got burned, would still suck. Be happy you mentioned your plan on going out at one-ish every day to your mother, because she, unlike you, adds together "bright, bright sun" with "palest in your class" and ends up with "time to get sunblock!" No love, me.

*rolls eyes at self*

Relatedly (and hilariously), I don't remember what we were talking about but today my mother called me opaque. Which ... yeah, I'm proud to say I'm opaque!

(She meant translucent, for the record.)

I now have all three Lord of the Rings books, yay! With added The Hobbit thrown in; when I went to buy them, the only option that would let me start reading them now (and also not necessitate going out and looking some more) was to get a box set, which was all AND ALSO HERE HAVE THIS COPY OF THE HOBBIT TOO IT'S FREAKING AWESOME. So I did. And my dad is going to mail me my Harry Potter books, as well as all my Diana Wynne Jones (if he remembers), so hurrah! I had mostly resigned myself to not ever getting those books back, I think. I am glad I am though!

My mom and I went to go see I Am Legend tonight. I was incredibly excited about it; I'm still kind of torn as to whether I feel let down or not. If I pretend that it was an original movie, an original story, that I hadn't gone into the theater with an idea of how it was going to go, I am free to admit that it was amazing. As an adaptation, um. It made me want to scream. Or shoot something.

But my mom really liked it! I tend to use her as a gauge, since usually the movies we go see that are adaptations are of books that I've read and she hasn't, so. There.

(They're right, though; Will Smith was really good.)

Meme time! If you had me under your command and could make me write anything, regardless of whether or not I know the fandom or write the pairing or if anybody even writes fic in that fandom and no matter how crack-addled it might be, what would you love to see me write? I am cuuuuurious.
